James Clyburn, minister and Congressman, speaks to the soul

Back

Rev. James Clyburn (D-SC) delivered a forceful speech (sermon?) before hundreds of activists who were in DC for Sojourners (a large progressive religious organization) 2006 Pentecost conference. Clyburn has been a longtime civil rights advocate, but did you know he met his wife of 45 years in jail? The Congressman shared a quote towards the end of his speech that is worth repeating: "Being a good neighbor is not dependant upon church membership. Being a good neighbor is not dependant upon ethnic backgrounds. Being a good neighbor is dependant upon compassion ... and sometimes, in order to show that compassion, you need to get down off your high horse."
